The community of Maidstone South East got together to vote on which projects they felt should receive funding from Gary Cooke’s member community grant.
The Otham Bell Ringers including their youngest member came along and asked for funding to contribute towards replacing the bearings of the three old bells which are over 100 years old.
The youngest bellringer in town won over the audience of 50 residents to secure a grant of £1,000 towards bringing the the frames and fittings within the lower tower up to the 21st Century standard.
They money will also support the replacement of the timbers and bearings and will be carried out by a specialist bell foundry
Leigh Windust from the bell ringers said: “The grant will help us achieve our goal and the improvements will make the bells easier and safer to ring especially for our youngest member.”
