The first phase of Kent’s road resurfacing programme for 2021 has recently started.
This five million pound phase of work includes twenty six locations around the county and will continue through to the end of March.
A considerably larger programme will continue over the spring, summer and autumn months.
The work will be carried out by GW Highways, who have recently been awarded a contract by KCC covering the next two calendar years, with the possibility of extending for a further two years based on performance. GW Highways is based in Kent and will utilise Kent businesses which is good news for the Kent economy during these difficult times.
KCC Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Michael Payne said: “The work delivered under this contract will include medium to large scale resurfacing schemes and a number of projects involving full reconstruction of roads, which in turn will reduce potholes on those roads for years to come. This is all in addition to our annual Pothole Blitz campaign.
“As part of this contract there are a number of environmental goals to ensure our target of net zero emissions is met by 2030. This will be centred on a joint approach with the Carbon Trust examining all aspects relating to carrying out resurfacing work, and will include, later this year, the increased use of innovative materials such as low temperature asphalts.
“Combined with our special treatments programme, which extends the life of roads and also prevents potholes, the investment by Kent Highways in planned road maintenance will continue to be a significant increase on past years.
“We very much look forward to working with GW Highways to deliver high quality, low carbon road maintenance over the coming years.”
