KCC is celebrating national Libraries Week (4-10 October) by focusing on the innovative and surprising activities that libraries are undertaking to support the county’s communities.
Libraries Week is an annual showcase and celebration of the best that libraries have to offer and this year’s theme is “Taking action, changing lives”.

Canterbury Library – launching an anthology of poetry
This celebrates the central role that libraries play in their community as a driver for inclusion, sustainability, social mobility and community cohesion. KCC is applauding the difference that its libraries have made throughout the pandemic and will continue to make in the future.
The week also marks the launch of Kent Libraries’ Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC).
The council has been allocated £627,245 by the Treasury to equip the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone with Business & IP Centre spaces, resources, and services.
From understanding the vital role of trademarks and patents to business research on customers, markets, and industries, plus workshops to develop practical skills in business, the Kent Business and IP Centre can provide the help and support that small businesses and entrepreneurs around Kent need.
The countywide programme of free activities for customers to enjoy includes:
- Highlights of what has been happening in Kent’s libraries over the past year, and how we have been supporting people through lockdowns
- Information about library activities and volunteering opportunities as they resume
- Help for everyone to get more from our online services
- Fun quizzes
- Information about National Poetry Day and World Mental Health Day
All Kent’s libraries have been open since August and the library activities, such as Baby Rhyme Time and homework clubs, are starting to get under way again.
Today (Tuesday 5 October) at 2pm, Canterbury Library will be launching an anthology of poetry written by its Wise Words for Wellbeing group.
