KCC funds Short Breaks summer activity programme

With the summer holidays just around the corner, Kent County Council (KCC) has a range of inclusive activities to keep children entertained and active over the summer break.

Alongside a full schedule of events run by children’s centres, youth hubs, libraries and country parks, KCC’s Disabled Children’s Services is subsidising a range of activities as part of its Short Breaks Programme through the charity Imago.

Short breaks give parents and carers an opportunity to have a rest from caring and look after their own needs while enabling young people with disabilities to take part in safe, fun and interesting activities.

Children aged eight to 15 can go on treasure trails, trips to the beach and Dreamland amusement park while young people up to the age of 19 will take day trips to the Imperial War Museum, Tides Swimming Pool and the Turner Contemporary.

Charities and other organisations are also running their own accessible events, including Toad on the Road, a multi-sensory theatre experience for children with disabilities, will be performing in Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells and Chatham through July and August.

Throughout August, Bore Place in Chiddingstone, runs a short breaks holiday club for children with additional needs aged 8-17. Activities include cooking, environmental arts, recycled art, den building, pond dipping, forest activities and gardening. There are also shorter activity mornings for the whole family.

Maidstone Mencap and the charity Pegasus are also running summer activity programs.

Mark Walker, Assistant Director for Disabled Children and Young People said: “We all need a break sometimes and carers of children with disabilities or additional needs are no exception”

“As a council we are committed to supporting carers and ensuring Kent is a friendly and accessible place to live, both for carers and people with additional needs. For more information about the support available, search for ‘support for carers’ on the kent.gov.uk web page.”

The Imago Short Breaks Activity Programme is available to young people who are:

  • Age 19 or under
  • Residents of Kent (in that their parents/ legal guardians pay their Council Tax to a Kent borough/ district Council)
  • Have a significant disability that prevents or hinders them from making use of activities generally provided for others of the same age.

All Imago events are subsidised by KCC and cost just £15.
