Dementia Awareness Week

Events offering information on dementia, helping those with the condition to live well and raising awareness will be at the heart of this year’s Dementia Awareness Week.

Kent County Council, in conjunction with other agencies, has arranged numerous opportunities across the county to highlight the common condition that affects about 835,000 people across the country.

Chair of the Kent Health and Wellbeing Board Roger Gough said: “We have all had lapses in memory from time to time, taken the wrong turning at a roundabout or made a mistake when carrying out a mental arithmetic task.

“It’s perfectly natural behaviour. But when does our behaviour indicate that we might be displaying the first signs of dementia? And what’s the best way to respond to someone experiencing dementia?”

The common condition affects over 800,000 people across the country.

Among the events (for more, see at the end of the article) are:

Ashford: throughout the week there will be a pop-up shop in County Square with information and advice from the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK.
Dartford on May 19 at the Orchards Shopping Centre, Dementia Friends will be helping people understand the things you can do that will make a difference to someone suffering from dementia.
Sittingbourne on May 22 between 10am and 4pm, the Forum Shopping Centre will be holding a day of live music, stalls, food and workshops to give visitors a new way of learning about dementia.
Faversham on May 23 between 10am and 2pm at the Alexander Centre there will be an awareness day.
Isle of Sheppey on May 21 at the Oasis Academy pupils will be hosting a “reminisce and rummage” event.
Tunbridge Wells on May 20 there will be a jive party at the Camden Centre in Market Square.

Cllr Gough added: “Kent is leading the way in helping people recognise the symptoms of dementia and how we can all help, in our own way. Recognition of the condition is so important.

“I hope as many people as possible will take advantage of the events taking place right across the county whether you just want to find out more, you’re a carer for someone living with dementia, or have a diagnosis yourself.

“The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner people with dementia and their relatives can access the help and support that they need and start to plan for the future.”

Throughout the week, displays of ‘Reading Well-Books on Prescription for Dementia’ collections will be available in several Kent Libraries.

KCC Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health Graham Gibbens said: “The collections aim to help improve people’s awareness and understanding of dementia in its various forms.

“It is based on a recommended list of professionally endorsed books that offer guidance and support on how to live well with the condition.

“The collections include personal stories, practical information and advice, and guides for relatives and carers.

“Libraries will also have a memory checklist which has been designed to help people put their information together before going to visit a GP.”
