Kent County Council and children’s charity Coram today held an Adoption Summit focussing on support for families after adoption.
KCC Cabinet Member for Specialist Children’s Services Jenny Whittle said the service wanted to follow up the huge improvements to recruiting adopters and placing children with families with enhanced post-adoption support.
She said, although very rare in Kent, when adoptions break down it was extremely traumatic for the child and their families so post-adoption support was critical.
The adoption service is creating a multi-disciplinary team, including child psychologist, clinical psychologist, family therapist, trainee clinical psychologist and social workers to make sure each family gets the support they need when they need it.
There will be a particular focus on support around adolescent children as research shows this is the most likely time that an adoption could break down.
