The contract for the road widening of the A28 Chart Road in Ashford between the ‘Tank’ and ‘Matalan’ roundabouts, in preparation for the Chilmington Green development, has been awarded to Jackson Civil Engineering Ltd.
Funding for the £32 million project has been secured by Kent County Council, with £10.2 million coming from the Local Growth fund obtained from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and the remainder through the Chilmington Green developers.
Site investigations and work to finalise the design will commence immediately, along with the acquisition of land that is required for the project.
Construction work is expected to start in early 2018 and take about 18 months to complete.
It will include 1.2km of new dual carriageway, improvements to the existing junctions and a new bridge over the railway line.
KCC project manager Barry Stiff said: “We’re pleased to have awarded the contract to Jackson and we intend to build on the relationship we have developed with them through their work delivering other successful major road schemes in Kent, such as Maidstone Bridges and Rathmore Road in Gravesend.”
Rupert Chitty, Regional Director for Jackson Civil Engineering, said: “‘Jackson Civil Engineering is delighted to have been appointed as the main contractor for this scheme in Ashford.
“We have a regional base in the county and a lot of our people are Ashford based, so we realise the importance of Chart Road to the town and the wider community.
“We look forward to working alongside Kent County Council to deliver a successful scheme for everyone.”
