A20 junction improvement proposals

Kent County Council has announced proposals to improve road lanes and cycle lanes along the A20 London Road in East Malling, Larkfield and Ditton.

The scheme, which goes out to public consultation on Monday, would take place between the junctions of New Hythe Lane and Station Road.

It aims to reduce congestion at these two junctions by increasing the number of straight-ahead lanes to two each way. This improvement is designed to cut down on the queuing times at these junctions and therefore improving journey times for motorists.

Work would also be carried out to upgrade the existing islands to allow for the full width of cycles, making crossing safer and more convenient for cyclists and pedestrians, and install a new island in the vicinity of the old Suzuki garage.

Currently there is no off-road cycle path and no continuous cycle lane along the A20 between its junctions with New Hythe Lane and Station Road.

The scheme proposes to improve the links for cyclists by providing a new widened shared cycleway/footway on both sides of the road for most of the route.

There will be two consultation events at Larkfield Village Hall on New Hythe Lane, Aylesford on Tuesday, July 16 between noon and 3pm and on Wednesday, July 24 between 5pm and 8pm.

You can also take part online at www.kent.gov.uk/a20junctionimprovements by emailing traffic.schemes@kent.gov.uk for a paper copy or at the events.

The closing date is Sunday, September 1.
