Work on the second phase of the Maidstone gyratory system improvement works begins on Monday.

The scheme started on June 6 and in order to minimise disruption construction work is being undertaken in different phases.

So far, work has seen:

• Site office and compound complete;
• Trial holes to determine the position of utility services completed;
• The existing islands, both north and south on Fairmeadow have been removed and temporarily resurfaced.
• The north island is complete with the southern island 90% complete due to further utility apparatus diversions required;
• Started construction to new substation retaining wall;
• Closed the Fairmeadow and Bishops Way subways;
• Started the blocking up of the entrances to the subways in preparation for the filling.

The second phase works, which include an overnight closure on July 27 with a diversion via Stacey Street for temporary lining, will see:

• A new traffic management arrangement
• The subway ramps and both subways will be filled;
• The retaining wall adjacent to the UKPN sub-station will be completed;
• Diversionary works of the existing fibre optic Openreach BT network will commence on the northern island;
• Construct new CCTV mast base;
• Commence construction of the two new lanes within the northern island;
• Ongoing drainage and duct installation throughout the period across all lanes.

As has been the cause during the first phase, the majority of lanes will remain open during the peak periods to reduce delays.

Completion remains on track for November.
